This OLD H op i K ac hi na is "Nihiyo" (Navajo Proud Kachina). It was purchased at the Hopi Mesas in the 1960s,but was considered "old" at that time. Navajo Influence : I was recently told by a very knowledgeable Kachina collector and student of Hopi art that this Kachina is presumed by the Hopi to have come from the Navajos and that he appears in the Hopis' Mixed Kachina Dances in the spring. The fancy Navajo-style silver and turquoise jewelry painted on this doll (necklace, bracelets, belt) show the definite Navajo influence. Size : Slightly over 10 inches tall from bottom of feet to top of head (not counting his wild hairdo of feathers). Condition : Very nice older condition. No breaks or cracks. T are a couple of scuff marks on the head that really just add to the authentic older look of the Kachina. The paint on his boots is somewhat faded, but the other paint is vivid, with very nice detail. The yellow, red and black "tail" is an interesting feature This is a fine, authentic example of a Kachina created by an artist fromthe Hopi Mesas in Northeastern Arizona. Very nice older collector's Kachina .
