Very "Old" Texas wooden horn cowboy saddle tree "collectible" likely dating back to the late 19 th century. This is an example of a classic wooden horn Texas saddle (or double rigged "Morgan" saddle) as sold from commercial catalogs of the late 19 th to early 20 th centuries. Most of the original saddle is missing including the girths, cinches, stirrup straps and stirrups, etc. All that remains is the rawhide covered "Texas" tree (12 inch seat) with its russet leather half seat, skirting and double "O" rings. I have over a dozen old 1870's through 1920's saddle catalogs from about ten different saddle makers. While I could not find this exact saddle I did find one very much like what it probably looked like (see below) from an 1890's Jacob Straus Saddlery Co. , St. Louis, catalog.The saddle tree shows normal wear and age but not abused. The wooden horn and tree are sound and sturdy but the rawhide is dry and pulling apart in some areas. All of the leather on this saddle is russet brown with some decorative stamping and is still flexible although a bit dry. It also retains much of its original hardware including some rings and decorative nails. It has the number "1279 " stamped in the skirt identifying it to the catalog.
