Olive wood Holy Land Cross Pope Pius IX in case c. 1870 We are offering an Olive wood Cross from the Holy Land with an association to Blessed Pope Pius IX c. 1870 N.B.: THIS ITEM IS NO LONGER CONSIDERED " BLESSED ,"having been offered and purchased at at least one estate auction.IT IS NOT BEING OFFERED AS A BLESSED ITEM.Any value it has is merely historical, & is unknown to us. THIS LISTING IS AMONG OUR LAST ON EBAY!THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATRONAGE! Item Description: A 6-1/2" x 13" wooden case on a pedestal with glass front and door on reverse. Inside are two wooden crosses hanging from a single brass hook. The cross toward the case front consists of what seems to be two slats of olive wood arranged as a Roman cross approximately 4-1/2" x 7-1/2" and bearing Arabic lettering in black across the center of the horizontal.The cross toward the rear of the case seems to be assembled from two prepared and polished stems of dark rosewood with a metal/enamel cap present at two of the ends arranged as a tall Roman cross approximately 4" x 10-1/2". Two slotted screws have split the bottom of the vertical while pinning the remains of a piece of curved, whitish material. Two brads on the crosspiece, and one at the center of the upright, tranfix a thinner cross of lighter wood arranged in an "x;" one is broken off at the crosspiece nail, and the other ends in a metal cap.Tucked into the case is an old piece of paper, approximately 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" which is quite toned, with torn edges and 3 burned or worn holes. Handwriting in brown ink reads as follows: "Olive wood Cross brought from Jerusalem by mother + blessed by his Holiness Pope Pius IX w he gave audience to mother + aunt Lydia Charlier in 1869 or 1870--"Affixed loosely with scotch tape to the back door of the case is a newspaper clipping bearing the headline "Pope Pius IX Cause Advanced," evidently from a newspaper dated shortly before that event which occured in 1986.
