This original MAP of North And South America is over 400 years old and shows the NEW WORLD (North and South America) as it was known in 1596, about 100 years after Columbus "discovered" America. Some scholars think of De Bry's images as a form of pre-newspaper , or as some call them- "VIEWS AS NEWS". These images brought to the European public the first realistic visualization of the exotic world opened up across the Atlantic by the explorers, conquerors and settlers from Christopher Columbus through the Spanish conquistadors. This specific MAP is titled: " America Sive Novus Orbis Respectu Europaeorum Inferior Globi Terrestris Pars 1596 and shows North and South America as it was known at the end of the 16th Century. De Bry's scarce and dramatic map of the New World shown in a sphere and bordered by full-length portraits of explorers Columbus, Vespucci, Magellan and Pizarro. The above view shows what this map looks like in its pristine state. The one that is at auction here is NOT in a pristine state (se photos above) The cartography for De Bry's map is derived primarily from Plancius’ world map of 1594, providing a relatively correct shape for the period and showing a vast southern landmass extending from New Guinea to Tierra del Fuego and beyond. The map accompanies Part six of De Bry's Grand Voyages. It incorporates information acquired by Cornelis Claesz in 1594 from the Lasso chart, showing a single insular Newfoundland. Also incorporated for the first time on an American map is information from White and Le Moyne along the Souteast Coast of North America. In the four corners are portraits of four important explorers of the New World, Amerigo Vespucci, Christopher Columbus, Fernando Magellan and Francisco Pizarro. This map is mainly derived from the Petrus Plancius World map of 1594, and of cartographical note is the large Southern Continent called "Magellanica", the single insular Newfoundland (acting on information acquired from Cornelius Claesz) and the clarification of the coast of "I. Dagoa" in the Solomon Islands. Theodorus de Bry (1528–1598) was an engraver , goldsmith and editor who traveled around Europe, starting from the city of Liège (where he was born and grew up), then to Strasbourg , Antwerp , London and Frankfurt , where he settled. He is best known for his series of volumes chronicling many of the earliest expeditions to the Americas. De Bry started the project in 1590 when he reissued Thomas Hariot’s narration of the first English settlement in "Virginia." This volume, to which De Bry added illustrations, was a success and it was followed the next year by a similar volume on the first French attempt at colonizing Florida. From then until his death in 1598, De Bry published other illustrated volumes and the series was continued until 1634 by his family, extending to 25 parts and including voyages to Asia as well as the Americas. Each volume of the De Bry series was accompanied by graphic illustrations of the events, many made from first hand observations. These very rare prints are some of the earliest authentic images of the New World, for previous accounts either contained no illustrations or their images were crude and mostly imaginary. Thus, De Bry’s prints provide an important contemporary view of the history of the nascent days of European conquest and settlement in America.
