Navy ships captains and artillery crews and directors, usually on battleships. This binocular (and other Mark 37's) began life as a common Mark 1 Mod 2 7X50 binocular. It was then converted at the Naval Gun Factory with 9 power oculars and 63mm objectives. The conversion process involved removing the old 50mm objective and fitting an extension barrel with 63mm objective into the 50mm objective ring.
