Up for auction is a grouping of six, unopened , 10oz cans of "Emergency Drinking Water" packaged in 1952 by the U.S. Government. Contract No. N383-155s-77754 Specification No. MIL-W-15117A Manufacture Date: 12-1-52 (see stamp on top of can) by the International Packing Corporation BACKGROUND INFO: - During World War II and the Korean War, emergencywater in survival kits was provided in cans, as described by specification MIL-W-15117 for the 10 ounce packaging. After the war's end, the grey painted cans were were used to stockpile (in the event of a Soviet attack) U.S. Air Force missle silos and by the Office of Civil Defense in public atomic bomb fallout shelters . The U.S. Navy continued to use them for provisioning life boats. The water itself was heavy and the steel cans made it even more so. Also, the cans had limited shelf life due to corrosion and leeching of the can materials into the water. Finally they were phased out completely and replaced with 4oz, trilaminate disposable, flexible pouches, specially lined drums or solid plastic containers (i.e. canteens). - These vintage cans are in extremely good condition.
