Ovoidstoneware jug, unmarked, with attribution to Frederick Carpenter at the potteryrun for Barnabas Edmonds in Charlestown, Massachusetts, 1812 - 1827. This quart-size jug has a mottled grey-brown salt glaze with two light kiln kisses to one side. It is in excellent condition with only a ½” x ¼” flake on the bottom, visible in the photo. No repairs or cracks: as near perfect as one may find them. The attribution is based on the color of the body and on the mottled effect, which has been associated with other of Carpenter’s wares, and especially based on the top and bottom ocher dip, characteristic of Carpenter’s work (see Ketchum, p. 48-49). The dip is light but can be seen on the top 1/3 and bottom 1/3 of the jug, with the darkest color at about ½ inch at both extremes. Height is 8 ¾”; width at the widest point is 5”.
