Palisades Amusement Park Postcard: Lake Placid Bobsled (circa 1938) Up for bid is this beautiful linen postcard showing the "Lake Placid Bobsled" at Palisades Amusement Park. The ride was built by John Norman Bartlett and opened in 1937. The ride worked on the principal of gravity gathering momentum from each twist and turn, exactly like a regular toboggan slide. The height of this ride was reportedly 125'. Given its location near the cliffs, the ride seemed even higher to riders. This ride ceased operation in 1946 and remained at the park until it was destroyed by fire in January of 1949. The postcard is used. There is a one cent postage stamp attached. It is postmarked "Palisade, NJ August 13, 1938." There is a slight shine to the front of the card in the upper left corner, which could be the remnants of postage stamp adhesive. The corners are nice and sharp. I would rate the overall condition as VG. It is postmarked "1938." PAPHS Catalog #4010-01. The card was published by Tichnor Brothers, #63735.Palisades was located in the Bergen County towns of Cliffside Park, Fort Lee and Edgewater. When the Park closed in 1971, it was a great loss to the millions of fans who flocked to its midways every year.
