Hand poured and struck by Gerrit Shilman 1 oz .999 silver 8 reales round in air-tite as shown. This coin is a reproduction of a 1690 8 Reales Spanish coin minted in Potosi Bolivia. The maker of these hammer struck this coin struck exactly like the original. Each coin contains one troy ounce (or more) of .999 fine silver. 1690 is a very rare date. These"pieces of eight" were the primary currency of the new world. They were traded extensively in pre-colonial, colonial and early decades of the United States. They were legal tender in the U.S. until 1859. The coins are about the same size as a Morgan silver dollar. These coins are mint perfect - exactly like the day the were struck. You are buying ONE coin from the lot. This coin is a reproduction. However, they are exceptionally well struck.The process of minting these coins is very labor intensive. First the silver is melted and poured into a silver blank of about the correct size. Then hammer the blank to shape it into a flange about the same size of a silver dollar. then polish the flange, heat it back up and place it between the upper and lower dies (made by a master craftsman - it took two months, and cost a bunch). then strike the top die with a really big hammer and hope for the best.
