In the days that followed Christmas it was beginning to become clear to Minnie Murphy that she was not feeling quite as well as she should be. Oh, she knew she was no spring kitten, but still, she had always had energy enough for the things that mattered. The things she needed to do. Her seemingly rather rapid decline frightened her, perplexed her, and made her feel as though she ought to get some help. With great reluctance she phoned her daughter Cassie. She hated to trouble her with her ailments. Cassie had her hands full with raising a family and teaching school. But Cassie appeared at Minnie's door shortly after one o'clock on a Friday afternoon, stating she had gotten a substitute teacher to cover for her and was not taking "no" for an answer. Minnie was going to the doctor's in Oroville that very afternoon. Together they would puzzle out what was wrong with Minnie and do whatever was needed to get her on the mend. Cassie was a no-nonsense type of woman, much like her Mother. The office of Doctor Harlow was crowded with folks who ranged in age from infants through the elderly. Minnie sniffed, thinking she herself was young by comparison to those who appeared frail and old. She never thought of herself as being anything but a rather young lass, with perhaps some premature gray that she easily covered with a dye made from boiled walnut shells. Lately she was afraid she might be falling into the borders of at least middle age! Truth be told Minnie had seen many, many a spring in her long life. But age is but a number, it's what you feel inside your head that matters. Cassie found a seat for them, squished in between a couple of children who looked to be about ready to throw a fit. She talked softly to them as their Mother looked on smiling. Cassie was very good with children; after all, that's one thing that made her an outstanding teacher. After what seemed an eternity Minnie and Cassie were ushered into the inner sanctum of the office to be greeted by Dr. Harlow himself. He had been Minnie's doctor for a number of years and knew with a glance that his patient was not at her usual energetic best. She had become weak, seemed to be missing the usual sparkle in her eye. He examined her carefully, prodded, and poked, ordered a battery of tests to be done at the hospital, and gave her a prescription for some medication. He talked to Cassie outside the door as Minnie got dressed. He was not certain what ailed her Mother but the tests should be back soon and they would proceed from there. In the meantime she should arrange for some assistance at home for Minnie. Cassie carted her Mother home, trying to mask her concerns about her health as she chirped on about how handsome Dr. Harlow was for a man his age. Normally this would have produced a remark or two from Minnie, but nothing came forth. Cassie called Pastor Frank. He would have a list of folks who could help Mother, of that she was certain. Cassie herself had to get home to her family that night as her son had an important basketball game she had promised to attend. Minnie was certainly in no condition to go anywhere though normally she would have been at Craig's game, rooting for him like she was a teenager. Cassie sighed as she thought about how ill her Mother seemed. With a heavy heart she explained things to Pastor Frank. He sent her on her way saying that Janet would pop over shortly until they could round up some ladies to stay with Minnie. Not to worry. Minnie was in the hands of The Great Physician. Offering up a quick prayer, he sought out his wife who headed to the Murphy house armed with chicken soup and fresh bread. Days went by and a small army of ladies looked after Minnie in shifts, even taking her for her tests to be done at the hospital. Minnie was grateful for such devoted friends. Her fellow parishioners took wonderful care of her, but still she was not on the mend. At long last Dr. Harlow drew his conclusions.
