A beautiful plastic HO model by Life-Like in their Proto 2000 line , of Milwaukee Road #33C, an Electromotive E9A diesel locomotive. The model looks fantastic, with the Proto 2000 penchant for superdetailing which set the model railroad world on its ear when the line was introduced a few years back: stand-off ladder rails and handgrabs, ALL 6 doors open and close on spring-loaded hinges, the metal locomotive ventilation grills along the sides are see-through type, knuckle couplers fore and af t, windshield wipers, the rear door diaphragm pivots as it would on the real locomotive... Operationally, the electric motor spins two MASSIVE machined brass flywheels which give the locomotive a pronounced 'momentum' effect when changing speeds. It also has an operating oscillating 'Mars' headlight (the upper one...), which flicks side-to-side when running, as it did on the real thing, in order to better attract motorists' and pedestrians' attention at grade crossings. The only cosmetic issue I can see are that several of the tiny 'floating' axle covers on the hyper-realistic trucks have popped off (best seen on the photo of the underside...) - this is difficult to see from any reasonable distance, and doesn't affect operation in the slightest.
