At its first inception in 1963, the Pullman 4427 PS2-CD low-side covered hopper was designed to carry 100 tons of intermediate-density products within the AAR plate "B" clearances. The car was a success for Pullman Standard, w/ 10,647 cars produced. But, Pullman standard did not rest on its laurels. By 1966, engineers had found a way to significantly improve the design by raising the lower edge of the sides of the car. This "high-side" design reduced weight, lowered production costs & improved access to the discharge gates & shaker brackets. The high-side covered hopper was even more successful than the original low-side model, w/ over 13,000 cars sold. This car was built in Pullman Standard's Butler, PA shops between 1966 & 1971. Pullman referred to it as model 4427 PS-2CD: "4427" in the capacity in cubic feet, "PS-2" refers to all Pullman Standard covered hoppers & "CD" stands for the center discharge gates.
