This auction is for one HARD-TO-FIND black-and-white aerial photo found in a collection of a former LCDR Navy pilot. On base margin area of front-side it states: "RANDOLPH FIELD--PROGRESS OF DEVELOPMENT", and is dated "1-16-1930"Internet research reveals the following: "Once the site for the airfield was selected, a committee decided to name the base after WILLIAM MILLICAN RANDOLPH, a native of Austin, Texas, who, during his 9-year flying career, earned a remarkable record and contributed immeasurably to the progress of aviation. On Feb. 17, 1928, while returning to his duties at Kelly, he crashed his AT-4 on take-off from Gorman Field, Texas. Ironically, Capt. Randolph was serving on the committee to select a name for the new airfield at the time of his death.RANDOLPH FIELD was dedicated June 30, 1930, with an estimated 15,000 people in attendance, and a fly-by of 233 planes, possibly the largest assembly of military aircraft in the world. This photo is used in Good (G) condition, very light edgewear to corners. The back-side shows some light pencil notation, with former owner's address label attached. The photo measures 9 1/4 (horizontal) by 7 1/4 (vertical) inches and will be shipped in a protective mailer. $3.00 first-class shipping (outside USA will be different). Thanks for looking!
