R.A.O.B. - LAPEL BADGE ( #983 ) The National Lifeboat Institute . In 1824 through the efforts of a courageous Lifeboatman Sir William Hillary the Preservation of life from shipwreck was founded. 30 years later to be renamed the Royal National Lifeboat Institute. In the early days lifeboats were launched off the beach and were pulled down to the sea and on its return were pulled up above the tide-line. In many cases by men manually and in some cases by women. Later boat-houses were built and the slip-way was designed, which made getting the lifeboats into the sea much quicker and easier, as was the return procedure, with the introduction of winches. After the life-boat Providence was moved to New Romney in 1861 there were several shipwrecks. These were mostly dealt with by the lifeboats of Rye and Romney. In 1873 a dreadful collision occurred just off Dungeness, when the ship 'Northfleet' was lost. The public attention which this tragedy attracted because of the heavy loss of life resulted in the reopening of the Dungeness Lifeboat Station in 1874.The lifeboat 'David Hullet' came on station in that year. During its period of service, it was launched fifteen times, saving twenty-seven lives.
