This is an early one and it is called a bookslide, bookstand, bookrack or bookholder. It holds books and slides in and out on triple telescoping tubular rods to hold varying numbers of books. The ends fold down flat for easy storage. Bookracks were popular from about 1880 to 1920 and were at their height of popularity during the victorian and edwardian and art nouveau periods. Then bookends began rapidly replacing them in the early 1920's. This one is a beauty, pure art nouveau in style and origin. t is kind of a curlicue and berry design all over with the head of a giant english bulldog right in the center. The head is wonderful, giant pushed in nose and muzzle, jowly, with deepset eyes, and wrinkles everyw The finish on this is gilded bronze with the bulldog itself contrasted with an original light silvery brown painted finish. The bookend parts are 7 inches across by a little under 5 inches high. It weighs over 3 pounds. It measures a good 12 inches at it's shortest length and 23 inches fully extended. These are becoming so popular as people discover how great they are for cd's, dvd's and books. This one is in such nice condition, all the original hardware, very little painted finish loss, and no damage. It is guaranteed old, genuine and original.
