(More pictures and full specification below) This lovely little purple slag glass dish was made by the Davidson company of Gateshead in Northumberland, probably around 1890-1900. I believe it is a base for a fairy lamp, designed to hold a small candle or night light in the centre; a decorative glass lamp shade would have sat on the rim inside the small 'buttons', and could have been made of any type of glass, not necessarily the same as the base. Davidson introduced what he called 'marble' or slag glass, in the late nineteenth century. It is clearly marked with the Davidson logo in the centre, but I have not been able to discover any other similar pieces made by Davidson, so I imagine this must be quite a rare example. It would still serve as a lovely night light holder even without the shade. For a full account of Davidson, both the firm and the glassware, look at the excellent Cloud Glass Reference site. Davidson Glass For 120 years Geo Davidson and Co produced high quality pressed glass in Gateshead , which was sold all around the world. George Davidson [1822-1891] was the son of a miller. He saw the true potential for 'Pressed Glass' in the market place, and in 1867 he opened his glassworks, the Teams Flint Glass Works in a field by the river Teams. Davidson himself was a man of enormous energy and enthusiasm, involving himself in the management of many local societies and businesses as well as his glassmaking enterprise. He was an active member in local politics under the banner of the Liberal party and he became Mayor of Gateshead from 1886 to 1888. Davidson was universally respected not only for his quiet unassuming manner, but also for his kindliness of disposition and charitable nature. It was whilst walking to church with his daughter on 22nd February 1891 that he died, but his legacy and passion for glassmaking continued to flourish. (With many thanks to the excellent 1st Glass website.) Details, condition, marks and spec... The dish measures 8 cm/3.25" wide, and 2 cm/0.75" high. It weighs 80 gms/2.8 oz complete and unwrapped, and I estimate will have a total packaged weight of 350 gm. ( NB: The International prices below are based on shipping costs to anyw in the USA or Australia and include insurance up to 68S/£34. Europe would be cheaper. ) The centre inside is marked with the Davidson logo of a lion in a turreted crown. The dish is in very good condition, with just two tiny, almost invisible, fleabites beneath the rim, and some light wear from use (see photos below).
