On offer is a brass adjustable trivet in miniature size, intended to be hooked onto the front of a grate, so that dishes could be warmed before serving or pots of coffee or tea kept at the right temperature by being moved closer or withdrawn from the heat of the fire. The design is 18th Century and the patina, particularly on the back, suggests that it really does originate in Georgian times if not earlier. The style of "pull" on the adjustable "shelf" is very reminiscent of Georgian and earlier designs. But research has not turned up any further information. The trivet is most unusual because it is, of course, too large for a child's doll-house, in fact too large for the adults' doll-houses of the early Victorian era when grown-ups were passionate about larger-scale miniature houses and dioramas. It actually might be a salesman's sample. I see this term used repeatedly and loosely for describing small objects and so am hesitant to use it myself because the term has become so devalued. But in this case it seems very appropriate as the size seems too large for any other purpose. Measurements are as follows: The shelf is 2 inches wide and 1-1/4 inches deep. The pull is an additional 5/8ths of an inch. The width at the hooks is just under 1-1/2 inches and is 1-3/4 inches high. And the length of the slide is 3-3/16ths inches. Please read more
