These are some of my favorite bookends and some of the most prized by bookends, cast metal and art deco collectors. They are by Pompeian Bronze and are clearly marked with that name on the back of each bookend. They measure a nice big 7 inches tall and weigh 6 and a half pounds the pair. They are in very nice condition, no damage, and this is the original polychrome coldpainted colorful finish and it is all t Pompeian, along with it's contemporaries Armor, Marion and Galvano, made bookends a certain way in the 1920's and 1930's that was so expensive and time consuming, that they have yet to be faked or duplicated. They made elaborate plaster molds and dipped them into a bronzing solution by means of long metal wicks in the base. When bronze clads, the wicks were cut off, leaving a telltale shallow depression in the base with the remnants of the metal wicks. They were then coldpainted to achieve a lustrous, long lasting finish so prized by collectors. These are colorful and brilliant, with the golden bronze body, standing on red and gold books, and having those big gorgeous, orange and black spooky halloween eyes. A nice horned owl and very popular with bookends in both the art deco and art novueau periods since the owl was the symbol of the goddess of Wisdom Athena and so associated with the knowledge in books.
