I purchased the Female Cav. image at a "Family" sale in Shrewsbury. The people were not collectors or dealers. Unfortunately, they had no idea of who she was, nor that she was a "she", although the auctioneer did recognize that fact, and advertised her as such. I tried to ID her but had gotten now..took books out of the library, read anything I could find online....nothing....until I listed the image. A very nice ebayer named Dave sent me the following link which recounts a woman named Mary Owens Jenkins' life as a PA 9th Cav. soldier. Mary Owens supposedly joined the service to be with a man she loved, William Evans. She used the Alias John Evans. William Evans reportedly dies and Mary/John stays in Service. Abraham Jenkins, whom she did marry, was also in the 9th PA. SInce I purchased her in PA , and other sources note that Mary Owens was a PA Schoolgirl from Montour or Huntingdon Counties, I started to research HER, and ended up with eyestrain and a headache. T is a lot of conflicting information out t, and tons of William Evans' and Abraham Jenkins. If the Mary Owens Jenkins in the Heartland link is my lady....she marries Abraham, a fellow 9th PA soldier. He was born in Wales and both before and after the Civil War, works in Coal Mining. They have 5 children, and Mary dies in or around 1881, when her youngest child in not quite 2 years of age. I DO NOT KNOW IF I HAVE FOLLOWED THE HISTORY OF THE WOMAN WHO IS IN MY TINTYPE. I JUST THOUGHT " HOW MANY PA WOMEN COULD HAVE BEEN IN THE 9TH CAV??????." This is the link Dave gave me and which started my Mary Owen Jenkins quest. /Heartland/Ridge/3774/ohiowomen.html The following information was from the Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum Library: William Evans as being in the 9th PA Res. Inf. 38 PA vols (some other source had him as Cav)...and Abraham Jenkins as 9th PA Res. Inf. 38 PA vols. From the CW Soldiers & Sailor's System info, the film # for Abraham is M554 roll 60, for William it was M554 roll 35. John R. Evans of the 9th PA Cavalry....... John R. Evans Residence was not listed; Enlisted on 10/19/1861 as a Private. On 10/19/1861 he mustered into "F" Co. PA 9th Cavalry He was transferred out on 6/25/1864 On 6/25/1864 he transferred into Veteran Reserve Corps (date and method of discharge not given) He was listed as: * Wounded 6/11/1863 Triune, TN This is an excerpt from from a Prof. @ Mountain State U.. T was a William Evans In the 9th Reserves, who then reenlisted in the 190th PA Vols and was captured at Petersburg. He died in Salisbury (NC) Prison on November 29, 1964. T was neither a John Evans or a Mary Owens on any of the 9th Reserves rosters. He did some further research and found out that this story became propagated in 1894 - 13 years after Mary's death. Some accounts say the 9th Cavalry and some say 9th Infantry. Some say she was wounded at Gettysburg. The original 9th Infantry & the 9th Militia Infantry were disbanded by Gettysburg; the 9th PA Cavalry were a Western theater unit and did not fight at Gettysburg. The 9th Reserves did fight at Gettysburg and only had 5 casualties - all are accounted for. Other details in the story do not play out either. T may be some truth in it; however, it may be completely apocryphal. ...
