It was established on March 16, 1937, and received its current name after being sold in 1679 by Mechacksett, chief of the Kahansink to Peter Bayard, an early Dutch settler. He purchased the wetlands for a whopping 4 handfuls of powder, 3 waistcoats, 1 anchor of liquor, 1 kettle, and a gun.Today the refuge protects wildlife of all kinds, with an emphasis on all migratory birds. The Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge is also home to the Allee House, a pre-revolutionary war farmhouse, Port Mahon Lighthouse, and the Bombay Hook Lighthouse.The refuge is also a focal point for waterfowl migrating between their northern breeding grounds and southern wintering areas along the Atlantic Flyway. The quarters have been issued depicting designs of national parks and sites in the order to which that park or site was deemed a national site.
