This RPPC caption reads, "REFUGEES, GUAYMAS MEX. JULY 4th, 1913. STROTHMAN PHOTO"Historians will appreciate this poignant photo of 14 women/children and 1 man, standing beneath the American flag on the 4th of July, awaiting rescue by American ships. Strothman does not appear to be a professional photographer. I have a few photos by him in this collection but haven't seen his work appear elsewhere.Guaymas is a major port in Sonora, and during the Mexican Revolution it was caught between opposing Mexican forces with their water supply cut off and in dire straits, until the Americans came in to take over the town. (I'm not a historian, but that's what my cursory research shows).PROVENANCE: This RPPC was part of a collection of navy-related photo postcards that I discovered in a south Texas antique shop. The general range of the postcards in the bunch has to do with naval operations in waters off of Mexico and Central America, having to do with the Mexican Revolution and/or Banana wars, mostly of the time frame 1913-1916 although a few are later or of other areas (ex. California, Bremerton). I do not know the original owner, I only know that the entire batch was part of an estate sale.Condition: Slightly bowed. As shown.
