This very nice saucer is in excellent condition in Staffordshire Blue with no chips, cracks or crazing. Has small section of back edge stain not affecting image. Has not been cleaned. Saucer is 5-3/8" in diameter with four scenes around the circumference including the USNA Crest at 12:00 O'clock; a US sailing ship at anchor at 3:00 o'clock; a scene of three sailing ships in what appears to be a Barbary Coast setting is at 6:00 o'clock; and at 9:00 o'clock is a battle scene between an American and English ship, probably the HMS Serapis and USS Bonhomme Richard. Three links of chain are located on the beveled transition between the ship scenes and the serving surface. Saucer is marked on reverse under glaze in blue with U S Naval Academy over Wedgwood Barlaston England These exceptional examples of Wedgwood china were produced for the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association (USNAAA) .They were produced by Wedgwood beginning in 1934 through the mid 1950s. Josiah Wedgwood (1730 - 1795) founded his company in 1759. In their more than 250 years in business, Wedgwood has established a reputation for quality and design worldwide for discerning customers including royalty and commoners alike. Beginning in 1934, the USNAAA commissioned Wedgwood to manufacture china depicting scenes of the Academy for Midshipmen, alumni and others. read more
