Paul and Dorothy Gutierrez have been making both black ware and red ware at Santa Clara Pueblo, in Northern New Mexico, since the 1960's. Paul has a fraternal twin, Pauline, and they are the children of Luther Gutierrez, who, with his sister Margaret did polychrome pottery with some serious and some whimsical designs. Paul and his twin sister learned how to make pottery from their Father. Paul chose to make the traditional black and red ware, but, Pauline chose to help her Father and her Aunt, with the pottery that they made, which was also traditional, but the process had been forgotten by most of the other Santa Clara families. Paul taught his wife, Dorothy, how to make pottery, after they were married. Dorothy is a member of the Navajo Nation, but, the couple chose to make their home at Santa Clara Pueblo, w they raised their children. As potters, the couple are famous for their figurines of animals, Mudheads, and Nativity sets. Their pottery is completely handmade. Handmade pottery is not as easy as some people think.
