A.J. McClane Signed Letter, Notes & Sketch To Miss Helen Shaw Coming from the personal files of Helen Elizabeth Shaw. A letter written to Miss Helen Shaw from A.J. McClane in regards to a question she had about early fishing hooks and how they were made. Along with the letter is a crude drawing (I presume done by McClane) that shows how it was done using old sewing needles. The drawing is on the back of what looks to be a Field & Stream magazine memo sheet. The letter is typewritten on Field & Stream letterhead and is signed " Al ". At the time McClane was the Fishing Editor for them. McClane also included for her an approximately two page type written account of early history of hooks, flies and fly fishing during the days of Walton and Dame Juliana Berner's. The pages are pasted and pieced together with corrections and it seems to me incomplete. Note that this was before Helen had married Hermann Kessler. She was also a good friend throughout her life with A.J. McClane. The photograph of Helen Shaw that I've included in this sale was more than likely taken by her husband. It is a print from an original slide coming directly from their estate. A letter of authenticity will also be included in this sale.
