The full sized poster originally advertis ing "CHARLES LOLOMA JEWELRY LITHOGRAPHS, DRAWINGS, The Artist Will Be Present April 25, 26, 27, 1980 GALERIA CAPISTRANO 31681 Camino Capistrano San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675" before it was trimmed. The poster is in very good condition boldly signed by CHARLES LOLOMA in black felt pen!A RARE signing by the greatest of contemporary American Indian Jewelry Artisans !The trimmed poster is in very good to excellent condition other than the uneven lower facing right edge, but this can easily be trimmed or matted to not show when framed.It is unframed and will be carefully rolled and tubed for shipping unless buyer has another preference for which they will pay.The interesting story behind this imperfect poster that is missing the bottom section advertising the event, is that there were none of the complete posters left, and the young daughter of a woman attending the show was very disappointed that she couldn't get one of the event posters signed by the artist. Not wanting to disappoint the young fan even though he was known to not like giving autographs, Mr. Loloma went into the back storage areas of the Galleria, and found a poster that had some damage to the bottom text area, he trimmed it and then signed it for the young fan. Charles Loloma (1921-1991) has long been considered and esteemed as the greatest of all contemporary American Indian Jewelery makers and designers. Loloma's breathtakingly beautiful designs and jewelry fetch astronomical prices at galleries and auctions the world over - and the continued demand for his exceptional work far transcends the quaint traditional turquoise and silver jewelry of his Hopi roots and that of American Indian jewelry generally - creating an immediately recognizable and oft copied art form that has fostered entire schools of followers and designers.At the age of 59, the already well established Hopi artist was cajoled into attending a show of the artist's latest works in lithography, graphite drawings and of course jewelry at a Gallery here in Southern California by the name of 'Galeria Capistrano' in lovely San Juan Capistrano in Orange County California. A well publicized show, the Gallery commissioned a poster featuring an image of one of the artist's drawings - a highly stylized rendition of Indian corn blurring the division between corn and feathers into a starkly beautiful still life. Our poster has not seen the light of day since that signing some 33 years ago - stored away out of light and hands - and protected in a large mylar gallery sleeve - as nearly fresh as the day it was signed in April of 1980. We have had several knowledgeable people look at the signature - dealers familiar with Charles Loloma's work and signature, auction houses, etc. and all concur that it is Loloma's live signature - and not an imprint or spurious. And while the stamped signature of Loloma was quite stylized this is indeed Loloma's actual signature while the artist's more stylized signature in the plate appears to be an extension of the corn's roots on the lower right side of the image.We are happy to offer this exceptionally beautiful poster with Charles Loloma's live signature from 1980 at a low starting bid with no reserve - though gallery and auction estimates far exceed our modest opening bid.
