This is the first petrified wood specimen I've been able to pin down as a true willow round from this magnificent forest. This is also the only one I cut from this log that had that unique white agate lightning bolt through the face. It might look like fill, but it's 100% natural white agate that formed natively in what was probably a stress fracture in the log before it petrified - it's smooth, solid, highly polished stone today! The cell structure is similar to several other diffuse porous hardwoods, but the dense and prolific multiple diamond shaped pores help distinguish it from similar species as do the squiggly medullary rays. It's a great specimen with classic Sweet Home coloration and a magnificent polish in a nice, larger sized petrified wood round. There are a few pockets of absolutely outstanding petrified wood in the hills in that part of the state. The wood that is found there is typically very, very agatized and extremely well detailed.
