It gets its color form being exposed to gamma rays during the formation of the crystal. The stone was known, until recently, as Cairngorm; named after the mountains in Scotland where it was discovered many many ages ago. As with all quartzes, Smoky Quartz has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness and forms in the Hexagonal crystal system. "Scepters" are the trade name for a mineral crystal that contains a center, or core, crystal that mushrooms to a larger size at the termination. Basically, another name for crystal overgrowth.
