Historically, the Russian Orthodox Icon artists came, primarily, from four villages. The Palekh style has gained considerable familiarity, while the three other villages, Mstera, Fedoskino, and Kholui, each developed their own unique and individual styles and interpretations. For example, Fedoskino is noted for the way its artists achieve a wondrously luminous quality on snow, dancer's costumes, and flowers by using overlays of transparent colors. The techniques used are also very interesting. Traditionally, the paints are egg yolk based and individually mixed in the egg shells. To achieve the very delicate designs, slender badger brushes, sometimes with as few as one hair, are used. In this auction we are presenting a PALEKH BOX depicting, in exquisite, miniature detail, a TROIKA, DRIVER & RIDER as the horses dash madly, driven by the driver's whip. It measures 7" long, 5" wide, 1-5/8" high, and is in excellent, mint condition for its age, and comes with its original Russian Gift Box (not shown - shows some shelf wear.) At the bottom, right, it is artist signed in Cyrillic print, which I will attempt to translate, " E. Korobsheena ." At the bottom, left, it states: N-9323, PALEKH, 1972 .
