Historically, the Russian Orthodox Icon artists came, primarily, from four villages. The Palekh style has gained considerable familiarity, while the three other villages, Mstera, Fedoskino, and Kholui, each developed their own unique and individual styles and interpretations. For example, Fedoskino is noted for the way its artists achieve a wondrously luminous quality on snow, dancer's costumes, and flowers by using overlays of transparent colors. The techniques used are also very interesting. Traditionally, the paints are egg yolk based and individually mixed in the egg shells.
