Special Hobby 1/72 Blackburn Roc Mk I Even stranger than the Skua was the Blackburn Roc. The Roc was a Skua modified to take a turret with 4 machine guns behind the cockpit in a similar fashion to the RAF’s Defiant. The Roc was even less successful than the Defiant. The Defiant could at least manage 300 mph and therefore could catch bombers but the Roc could barely get above 200 mph, meaning any modern bomber could simply outrun it. Needless to say, the Roc’s career was very short. Some even ended up as static AA emplacements after they were damaged by Stukas in a raid. Rocs were very quickly removed from frontline service and none lasted longer than 1943. Special Hobby is a Czech based manufacturer and this is their 1/72 Blackburn Roc kit. This is a detailed multimedia kit, consisting of mostly injection moulded plastic parts but with additional resin and photo etch metal parts. There are markings for 4 Rocs: No 759 sqd FAA, RNAS Donibristle, November 1939; No 806 sqd FAA, Hatston airfield, Orkneys, April 1940; No 778 sqd FAA, RNAS Lee-on Solent, May 1940 and Finnish air force, Dycen airbase, Scotland, 1940.
