St Rita of Cascia (1386-1457) was interested in the religious life as a young girl, but her parents betrothed her at age 12, and at 18 she married. Her husband turned out to be abusive, and she put up with this for 18 years, bearing him two sons, until he was ambushed and stabbed to death. Her sons swore vengeance on their father's killers, but through Rita's prayers and interventions, they forgave the attackers. When her sons also died, Rita entered into religious life in the convent of St Mary Magdalene. There she spent the next 40 years of her life. She was devoted to the Passion of Christ and in answer to a prayer, received a wound which appeared to have been caused by a crown of thorns, which bled for 15 years. St Rita is the patron of hopeless or impossible causes, widows, difficult marriages, and victims of spousal abuse, and wounds. Visit our Ebay store read more
