The elegant beauty and exceptional quality of this piece of peruvian art are overwhelming.A captivating oil depicting St Rose of Lima with the Divine Child Jesus.Santa Rosa of Lima was the first native of the Americas to be canonized. Thus, she holds a special place among the saints venerated in the New World. Born in the viceregal capital of Peru in 1586, she became a Dominican tertiary nun at an early age, showing great concentration and exemplary obedience to the rules of the order. Her talent in writing poetry, singing and playing instruments, especially the harp, distinguished her among her companions. St. Catherine of Siena became her model, and with mortification, hard work and love for the indigent and sick, she also experienced a vision of the Infant Christ and a mystic betrothal. As her"little doctor", the Christ Child is said to have advised her how to treat her invalids. She died at the age of thirty-one, surrounded by devoted religious personnel, and rejoicing in her departure from this earth.Details are exquisitely embellished with bronze leaf, an indicative of the Cusco School of Arts.This painting has been done in the style of the works of La Escuela Cusqueña, the history of which is traced to the 17 th century. Originally influenced by Spanish and Italian artists, this school was comissioned to paint sacred art in churches and monasteries throughout the Peruvian city of Cusco after the area was devastated by an earthquake in 1650.
