No splits or tears.Text of letter :(on address leaf: "When Mr. B is absent his clerk will open this""The U.S. mail was stolen off of the stage coach about one mile west of this village today, the bag cut open and nearly all of the letters opened.A man calling his name William Barton was arrested soon after the discovery and confessed himself guilty. He went with the people and showed where the letters were.All the letters have been recovered except two. Barton has been committed to our jail. IF you will write us when and where the next US Court sits and send me the necessary process for _____ I will insert the names of the witnesses. Barton probably had an accomplice who has fled, but this is not certain. Our citizens turned out to search with alacrity which does them great credit.Barton is a stranger here, had been to work for one of our farmers a few days.Yours, J. O.
