STANLEY No 72 1/2 CHAMFER PLANE EARLY TYPE Offered here is a Stanley No. 72 1/2 Chamfer Plane with the bullnose and beading attachments and all six cutters. The plane is in very good condition overall, considering its age. The plane itself is 9 inches long; the cutter is 1 5/8 inches wide. The cutter says “Stanley Rule & Level Co” at the top, with a partially obscured 1886 patent date. The metal surfaces are clean and free of rust; the photos show the general loss of some of the japanning. The rosewood handle and knob are in great shape as well, with only the small marks and dings of age. The word “STANLEY” is cast on one side of the plane, below the handle, and the mark “NO 72” (with no periods) is in the same place on the other side. (I understand that Stanley did not use “72 1/2” on these planes; it only meant the No. 72 was furnished with the beading attachment.) The absence of a patent date on the plane makes it an earlier type, I understand. The lever cap screw is the early type, made of cast iron and japanned, like the lever cap itself. The C-shape cutter clamp on the beading attachment is cast brass; the tightening screw on it is a paddle type, which I understand first appeared on the clamp in 1895. The star wheel screw on the bullnose attachment is cast brass; the one on the beading attachment is cast iron. One can easily read more
