The cross is a solid ingot of sterling silver with a matching large custom made sterling silver chain. The entire piece weighs 217.80 grams and the design is unique to Santayana Jewelers, who customs made the mold, by use of a computer program that cuts with lasers. The cross is 4 inches long, ¼ inch thick and 3 inches wide. The chain is 26 inches long and is permanently attached to the cross that it was made for. The diameter size of each link is ¼ inch. The design represents the cultural struggle of Christians from Cuba living in Miami , who are torn between their new home, and the one they left behind. In the background are hundreds of Cuban Royal Palms, the native tree of Cuba . At the top of the cross is the Cuban Flag covered with a crown of thorns, representing the suffering of the Cuban people. The crown of thorns is repeated further down the cross, and the chain in the middle represents the Cuban people's loss of freedom. Another Cuban symbol represented is the ox-drawn wagon (carreta) used on the old sugar plantations, and the machete (used to cut the sugar). The Christian fish symbol appears further down on the cross, and a heart on the middle right. This is the most unusual piece that has ever been consigned to us for auction. We have set a low reserve and are praying that this piece goes for much more. Good luck bidding! read more
