You are bidding on a silk Stevengraph bookmark. It represents the centennial celebration of our country. Depicting George Washington as the father of our country. Note: the paper backing that the bookmark is pinned to has two (2) creases. One at the top and one at the bottom w it was folded during storage. The paper backing also shows some discoloration from age. The silk bookmark itself is in excellent condition. Words: CENTENNIAL 1776 - 1876 U. S. A. T he first in peace, The first in war, The first in the Hearts of his Countrymen. image of eagle and various flags PHILADELPHIA 1876 Size of Silk: 27.9 cm long by 6.3 cm wide Alternative back-ground colours: Comments: Signed: "THOS. STEVENS COVENTRY ENGLAND" on back at pointed end: Thomas Stevens invented the title "STEVENGRAPH" and the first recorded use of this title was on the paper-backing label of his woven silk bookmarks, in 1876. Stevens also later named his factory in Coventry, "Stevengraph Works" and this again first appears on the bookmark-backing label of 1878 - 1880. The title Stevengraphs later became loosely applied to all the silks of this period produced by other weavers.
