Extremely rare and difficult to find large set of early Sunset Mountain Pottery. The set includes (10) plates that are about 8.5", (11) plates that are 6.5", (2) cups that are about 4" high and (2) "bowls" that are 2" high. In overall very nice condition. Some of the larger plates have some little nicks around the edges and one of the cups has a crack and a chip. Most of the pieces are marked Sunset Mountain Pottery on the bottom but not all of them. Sunset Mountain Pottery was very popular from 1929-1935. It was produced by J.B. Cole and his family in Steeds, North Carolina. Done with the early salt-glaze, these pieces were hand turned and fired in a wood kiln. They were purposely made very crudely to appear as true mountain pottery which was appealing to people during this time since after World War I, t was a great desire to return to the more traditional styles and methods of creation. The pottery was produced in colors that were sunset tints. This particular set is a nice yellowish color with a bold cobalt blue drip around the edges. Like I have said before, this pottery is hard to come by. This is a great find!! Please feel free to ask questions prior to bidding. All sales are final. I will accept Paypal, check, or money order.
