We are showing both just for comparison. The first is one that sold at Christie's New York sale, Indian and Southeast Asian Art, 30th March, 2006, Lot 106, Mon Dvaravati 9th to 10th century, 9 1/2 inches H, and sold $9,600. Second - From the Metropolitan Museum, New York, LF 2006.53, 7 7/8 inch H - early Pyu kingdom, 8th to early 9th century. Description composed by world renowned Asian expert & appraiser, Mr. Anthony Lee. His bio is below. Thailand, 800's to 900's. Very Rare Mon Dvaravati Standing Bronze Buddha - The Ryder Collection. His face with meditative expression, arched eyebrows over downcast eyes, wide smiling lips, elongated earlobes, curled hair whorls. Right hand slightly raised and left hand lowered in a form of vitarka mudra (teaching gesture) combined with abhaya (coming in peace) and varada (granting of wishes). The sanghati robe draping over the left shoulder and leafing the right breast and arm uncovered, the robe clinging closely to the body over the torso and legs and sweeping slightly to the right at the hem, falling in a wide curve from the extended left hand. Standing straight and with both feet firmly planted on the ground. Evidence a tang between the two feet holding the image upright. Polished stone collection base. It measures approx. 7" tall on the stand. This elegant example of the period was the oldest bronze Buddha in the Ryder collection. Despite the compactness, this small figure has an inner power in its very economic form. The hands are both naturalistic and expressive, though the face is almost too peaceful to he point of not seeing. The characteristics of the Mon Dvaravati form show through in the very wide mouth and natural round face, the body with the clinging fabric just barely covering the contours of the shape. Even more rare is the fine patina without extensive corrosion, pitting or encrustation, suggesting a very high quality of bronze and casting, and a [possibility that the piece was never buried, but rather has survived in temples or was kept as a private devotional image. from the Metropolitan Museum website - Between the seventh and ninth centuries, multiple competing kingdoms emerged in central Thailand and it is at this time that the earliest Buddhist and Hindu sculptures first appear in this region. For a time, the Dvaravati rulers in the central Thai city of Nakhon Pathom maintained power and many scholars have used their name to characterize this period and a people who spoke the Mon language. Unlike the Pre-Angkorian kingdoms of the Mekong delta that were linked to China and India by an international trade network, central Thailand remained relatively isolated. As a result, a distinct and highly sophisticated Mon-Dvaravati style emerged (1987.417.5). Buddhism appears to have been the major religion, but the presence of Hinduism is well attested by monumental lingas found throughout the region (1994.510) and images dedicated to Vishnu.
