This is a covered pan tin betty lamp, a bit later than the other two I have listed (tin came after iron, glass whale oil lamps after tin). When they started making these types of lamps, they made the pans deeper and covered the pans to prevent spillage of the very precious oil. The rolled tin wick holder was also an "improvement" on the previous iron open-style lamps. Once again, you can see similar illustrated examples in Arthur Hayward's "Colonial and Early American Lighting." Nice patina, no damages. A low reserve for an early lamp. SEE ended auction #330061341965 by echodale, who sold a similar group of five pan lights. They sell only primitive folk art lighting and date these lamps circa 1725 to 1800. They are not all that easy to find, and are not always in good condition because no one cared for them once they no longer used or needed them, just like flint glass whale oil lamps, which are often found drilled and missing their all-important burners. The reserves for the three that I have listed are not at all high.
