Titanic - Crow's Nest Key - Artifact Replica - White Star Line 1912This is a historically accurate replica of one of the rarest and most prized artifacts from Titanic: the 'Crow's Nest Key'. Key is designed to have a vintage look to it. Key and tag is all-metal & brass plated, it looks just like the real thing. There is a fascinating story behind the key to Titanic's lookout tower known as 'The Crow's Nest'. This tag and key has been been carefully reproduced from the original- from the size and font on the tag as well as the cut of the teeth in the barrel key. It is very likely this replica key could actually open the 'Crow's Nest' locker which still exists today sunken in the wreckage of Titanic 2 miles below the surface of the North Atlantic. In 1912 the original 'Crow's Nest Key' was in the pocket of Titanic's Second Officer David Blair. Blair was called off the ship shortly before her maiden voyage and forgot to hand the key to his replacement Second Officer Charles Lightoller. It is believed the 'Crow's Nest Key' would have given the lookouts access to a locker box containing special large lens binoculars. These 'night glasses' were vital to detecting icebergs in the days before sonar. Lookout Frederick Fleet later testified that if they had access to binoculars in the Crow's Nest they could have spotted the iceberg sooner. read more
