This rare and collectible book is the original 1923 First Edition of Tongan Place Names, by Edward Winslow Gifford, Bernice P. Bishop Museum Bulletin 6, Bayard Dominick Expedition, and Published by the Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii. The book is 258 pages and is soft bound with paper wrappers. The book measures 7" x 10" and contains two maps. Overall the condition is good/fair. The paper cover has separated from the spine of the book. T is chipping and a few tears to the paper covers. Most of this is in the area of the head and tail of the spine, and the corners of the covers. T is softening to the pages of the book. The fist few pages have some minor chipping to the corners and a small ½" tear. T is mild age-toneing to the edges of the pages, however is it not as bad as some of the photos make it look. On page two is a stunning paste-down full color print titled: Polynesian Culture; Weapons and Designs. You can see this in my photos #1 and #5. On the page before the Contents is printed: Edward Winslow Gifford was in charge of the Tongan Party of the Bayard Dominick Expedition, 1920-21.
