5 DOLLARS SILVER 999 COIN - TREASURES OF THE WORLD - SAPPHIRE - PALAU 2010 TREASURES OF THE WORLD - SAPPHIRE SILVER 999 COIN WITH AN AUTHENTIC SAPPHIRE The second coin to be released in the popular series of antiqued silver coins entitled "Treasures", this eye catching issue is devoted to the Sapphire - and includes an actual sapphire embedded in the coin itself! The periodic image on the reverse side of this coin shows a jeweler polishing a large Sapphire. Embedded into the coin here is an actual Sapphire. The coin has gone through a special minting process to give it an "antiqued" appearance. On the obverse is the Palau coat of arms. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY SAPPHIRE Sapphire is a gemstone variety of the mineral corundum, an aluminium oxide , when it is a color other than red or dark pink, in which case the gem would instead be called a ruby, considered to be a different gemstone. Trace amounts of other elements such as iron, titanium, or chromium can give corundum blue, yellow, pink, purple, orange, or greenish color. Pink-orange sapphires are also called padparadscha.
