Civil War or pre-Civil War, Model 1840 enlisted cavalry saber with steel scabbard. Probably a German import type sword. Marked on the ricasso with "R & C". I have not been able to determine who the maker was. Maybe someone out t can help with this. The 34 7/8" blade has a wide fuller and small narrow fuller near the top. Flat back. The blade is covered with old grease and rust. No edge nicks that I can see. Handle grip is wood wrapped with heavy string and then covered with leather and wire wrapping. T is a crack in the wood. Much of the leather is missing and the wire wrapping is very loose. Has some additional black thread wrapped around the upper part of the grip. Brass pommel and three fingered guard have not been cleaned and show a deep dark patina. Some wear and scratches to the brass fingers. The quillion looks like it was bent at one time and maybe straightened a bit. T is a small crack at the edge of the guard. The original leather blade washer is present. The scabbard has a heavy old rust patina overall. It has numerous large dents in between the the rings. Probably to keep it from rattling when on horseback. Two small holes on front and rear sides of the scabbard near the throat fitting, maybe had screws at one time. No other identifying marks that I can make out. Please have a look at all the photos for details and condition. read more
