This wonderful item comes from the estate of a dear friend who passed away last winter. She started collecting antiques in antique shops in the 1920's, and continued almost up into last year. Over the next 3 months, I will be occasionally listing some of these wonderful things gatd over a long and interesting and adventurous lifetime. I know that she collected throughout New England, Virginia and the Southern states, in New Orleans antique shops, and throughout the West. (I was with her on some of those Western antique shop trips). As you see by my EBAY name, my specialty is old labels and marine antiques, so please excuse me if I am unable to properly describe some of the fine china and silver items she collected.This covered jar is about 7" high and approximately 5" across at its widest area. I called it Japanese, as the young women on the jar appear to be dressed in old style kimonos. I noticed a very faint repaired crack on the jar lid. I also left on the jar, old residue of scotch tape or something that was used to keep the lid on the jar while in a moving box (My friend was an Admiral's wife, and moved every 3 years to a new assignment like I did). I think the tape residue will clean up just fine. I could not make out the words glazed in to the bottom of the jar, they are barely visible. I suspect this is an old export jar - but could be something else. I hope you are able to enjoy these treasures as long as my friend did.Good Luck with the bidding!Further researching these lovely items, I've discovered that maybe 1 and to up to 3 are cloisonné' or at least look that way... After looking at this beautiful jar a little more closely (in better light), what I believed to be a crack in the lid is actually scotch tape residue left over from a previous move. I now think the jar is in excellent condition. In looking at the coloring, and fine make of the pottery (translucent - you can see outside light while looking into the jar - on all sides and through the bottom). I now feel this jar is much older than I first estimated, and would have probably pulled it off auction, except for a bid now on this item. Your getting a heck of a bargain if this piece sells for under $ 50.00. I don't know how the February 10 information on cloisonné ended up on this auction - it was referring to another auction item. This auction is for an old fine blue and white jar with lid. I answered another question about the jar tonight to an interested potential bidder - so sharing what I said: the bottom has unintelligible marks on it that are on 3 lines. While not the exact lettering below, the markings looks something like:r.viVa417saMy friend had a large collection of quality English (early period) china and French Limogoes dishes and old boxes. Could this be an old English porcelain piece which is made to look oriental? I don't know. This jar has the patina of an old antique - kind of like flow blue (which my friend also collected). Sunday - I have received alot of interest in this vase, and several people have asked for more details on what's inscribed at the bottom of the vase. Although I am no camera wizard, I managed to capture a little clearer photo of what is on the bottom (glazed into the jar). I originally thought it might be a worn "made in ______" writing, but the inscription looks more like symbols and are not centered with each other. All that said - t he jar is well designed, and the pattern around the jar is not duplicated (i.e. the geisha girls walking along are beckoning to the other group, so as to view one continuous picture across the vase). read more
