OLD UZBEK TRADITIONAL SILK-COTTON ADRAS QUILTED CHAPAN ROBE. ikat (cloud) adras (blend of silk & cotton) fabric Of all the textile arts of Central Asia it is the ikats that you will probably find the most exciting. The brilliance in color and extraordinary pattern designs are reminiscent of modern painting. Many of the motifs used originated from flowers, fruits, animals, household items and images that were seen in our people's daily lives. The single feature shared by all of these extraordinary pattern textiles is the dyeing process which is undertaken before the individual elements are arranged upon the loom. All ikat cloths have either their warps, their wefts or in rare cases both warps and wefts dyed only in selective areas and only before those threads have been placed upon the loom. The process of preventing the dyes from penetrating the entire warp or weft is known as 'reserving' or 'resist dyeing' and produces the essential characteristics of ikat cloth. At the points w the reserved areas meet the dyed sections, carefully controlled amounts of color merge with one another randomly creating subtle, slightly blurred patterns. The dyeing technique ensures that each 'cloud' is unique; each nebulous area of conjunction differs slightly from the others, and it is this aesthetic quality which suggests an analogy with clouds. This dress is an Old Uzbek Traditional silk-cotton adras quilted chapan robe from Horezm. The age of the chapan robe is the first part of the 20th century. The silk adras fabric was dyed with natural dyes from various plants and insects. The reds come from madder and cochineal; the blues come from indigo; the yellow from a variety of local plants; the black from pomegranate; the purple from plant louse; and so forth. The brilliance of the dyes, along with their subtle variations, results in an appearance unmatched by the flat regularity of modern chemical dyes. The chapan is warmed with batting and quilted. It's framed with woven verge and lined with cotton cloth. Measurements: length 46'', arms spread out- 44'', chest measurement- 36''. Condition: good.
