Wonderful early 20th Century character toys 'Mole' and 'Ratty' from 'The Wind in the Willows' possibly made by Chad Valley? This pair of unusual soft toys were possibly made by Chad Valley who were making jointed velvet dolls in the 1920's and 30's or they could be by another British manufacturerand although they dont have any labels I can see, they have been very well made. They represent two characters, Ratty and Mole from the Kenneth Grahame book 'The Wind in the Willows' and both are five ways jointed so they can be very nicely posedwith Ratty standing at 13" tall and Mole standing at 12" tall. Both are kapok stuffed with carded feet so they can also stand up although they are a little bit unsteady on their feet. They are slightly playworn and Ratty is missing his ears with slightly dishevelled clothesbut the joints on both toys still turn easily and there is very little wear to their velvetbodies. Their clothes are slightly moth eaten, particularly Ratty's orange felt jerkin, which has also faded and Moles jacket which is frayed at the elbows, but considering their age, I think they are in remarkably good condition and it would not take much to restore or replaceRatty's ears. Ratty has his original amber and black glass eyes and Mole has stitched eyes which are also original as this helps him see in the dark underground. I read more
