Absolutely magnificent antique hand carved chess set! I believe that the set sates from th early 1900's and comes in a beautiful gold and black laquer carrying case that is silk? lined, has custom cut slots for the pieces and they have elastic bands across each slot to hold the pieces in place (although due to age the elastic is pretty worn out so ithas trouble keeping the pieces in place) ALL of the pieces are made from the same material which according to the label on the silk lined case are 100 % African tusk ivory. The label reads: GUARANTEED AFRICAN TUSK IVORY Tsang King Kee Ivory Factory Made in Hong Kong B.C.C. I think the pieces are made from "French Ivory" but I will let the buyer determine that. I tried to show close-up photos of the material so that you can be the judge. The dark pieces are made from the same material as the white pieces and have been stained/painted a nice dark shade of brown. The pieces are in excellent condition with the exception of some light paint loss on he dark pieces and one of the white knights has minor damage on the tips of the ears. EVERY piece is hand carved and are a nice large scale with the King measuring 4" tall which I think is the ideal size for play or display.
