An exceedingly rare, old Ramakien (Ramayana) khon mask from Cambodia, representing Hanuman. It is fairly common to see recent Khon masks made for tourists in Thailand, but this is (a) not a tourist mask, (b) comes from Cambodia rather than Thailand, and (c) is fifty years old. I have never seen another like it.The Ramakien is the southeast Asian adaptation of the Hindu epic, the Ramayana. In it, the monkey-god Hanuman assists Rama, one of the incarnations of the god Vishnu, to defeat the vanara king Vali and rescue his beloved from the demon Ravana (Totsakan in Thai). The craftsmanship is excellent, and the condition is superb. This is a rare opportunity.Region: CambodiaOrigin: Phnom PenhEthnicity: KhmerCeremony: Ramakien DramaType: HanumanMask Age: 1965Materials: paper maché; paste; paintDimensions: 12" wide x 11" deep x 9" tallFeel free to message me with questions.and !
