Vintage Erzgebirge Expertic DDR Germany Christmas Carousel is a wonderful vintage German wood Christmas carousel or pyramid. This carousel stands about 8~3/4" high and the top measures about 7~1/2" across. The carousel features 3 handpainted children dressed for winter. One holds a candle and a basket, one holds a Christmas tree and the other holds a painted box on a stick. T is a shaved wooden tree in the center and t are 2 shavings at the very top of one row that are broken off. I have shown this in the photo above, but you have to look closely to see it. The 3 little wooden children measure almost 2" high. This center sections turns when the 4 candles that are on the outside of the wooden arch are lit. As the heat from the candles rises, it turns the top paddles, which in turn rotates the center circle with the kids and shaved tree. 3 of the top wooden paddles have singe marks on them, probably from someone using candles that were a bit too tall. Two of these could certainly be sanded off and not affect the shape of the paddles at all, but for all the years that I have owned this, I liked the thought that this old German carousel had a history and thought about the people that had owned it before me and enjoyed using it. The underside of the base still has its original tag that reads "Original Erzgebirge" "Expertic" "DDR" , which I believe is an abbreviation used after World War II for East Germany. This carousel comes in its original box and the previous owner or perhaps someone from the store that this came from had written in ink "Children @ Play". I have the old candles that came with this when I purchased this at an antique store several years ago. They were somewhat melted and a bit ill-fitting but I will include them with it. I never lit candles with it as I always had it sitting on a table near a heat register so the air movement made the carousel turn gently.
