This coverlet has always been in our family, and was made by my grandmother or a great aunt. I'm estimating the time to be 1920-1924 when my Mom left home with it as a young woman. It looks like the Dresden Plate pattern, except only 1/4 of the plate in each square. It also looks similar to the fan pattern .Each squares measure 71/2 in by 71/2, and the quilt measures 68" by 78". Each finger of the colored print portion of the fan is pieced together by machine and then sewn onto the front of the square. The squares were then machine sewn on, and the stitching is on both back and front. There is no batting in the coverlet, and it has a finished second side, so appears that it was not intended to be any heavier. There are no rips or tears. There a place where two squares have frayed, and have pulled away from the stitching a bit due to aging and being folded. There are no significant stains. There is some very minor fraying on some of the edges, and some age color deterioration. This has been in storage in a cedar chest for over 70 year. A soaking and gentle hand laundering should improve it.
