These came from France and they are guaranteed old, genuine and original. Art deco in style and origin, circa 1925, made out of cast spelter or pot metal, what the french call white metal or regule, and finished with a lovely gilded bronze finish. They sit playfully on lovely rose beige french marble bases with only a few tiny nibble on the corners of each bookend. The dogs have no damage but one has been reglued to the base. Interestingly enough, and showing the handmade nature of these, one terrier is attached by the front foot and the back to a base and the other is only attached at the back of the dog. These are absolutely the original and matched onyx marble bases so you know they were hand attached back then. I love the expression on this dog's face, with the uplifted paw and the open mouth, wild eyes, and laid back ears. I guess you could call these SHAKE!!! Rare bookends and very, very appealing, these art deco French dog bookends. Thanks for looking and please see my other auctions for more antique and vintage cast metal bookends and doorstops that I will combine on shipping whenever possible.
